FT: How did you get into photography?
LS: When i was 10 years old, my mother handed me a Pentax Spotmatic and a roll of black and white film. She told me that everything I needed to know about photography was in my eye. Everything else I’d learn along the way.
FT: How many cameras do you own and which is your fav?
LS: I currently own 11 cameras. My absolute favourite is my Holga. I bought my Holga after I’d been shooting digital for about 2 years. It was the re-birth of me using film and it started a whole new direction in my work. I’ve taken some of my favourite photos on my Holga.
FT: How would you describe your photography?
LS: A series of calculated mistakes
FT: Why do u prefer shooting in b/w?
LS: I think b/w is more suited to photography. It has a timeless feel that creates an almost simulated moment. When you see the photo, your mind remembers the events, but it doesn’t remember it looking like that. I love creating that sense of pseudo-reality. Something that looks real and unreal at the same time.
FT: Music is also important to you, what have you been listening to lately?
I’ve been listening to The Cinematic Orchestra alot lately. Also Spiderland by Slint is part of my regular rotation these days. Oh and lots of Four Tet!
FT: Where do you dream of going to shoot?
LS: Either Japan or New York.
FT: And finally, any tips for anyone interested in having a shot at lomo?
Lomo is a great form of photography because it takes away a lot of the thinking and makes a photographer rely more on their eye. Develop your eye and your photos will look amazing, no matter what your medium is!
