Die Young is an exhibition of works by iconic Sydney Illustrator, Ben Brown.

Ben’s obsessive-compulsive artistic relationship with skulls and bones is clearly a consequence of being born with super human illustration skills and x-ray vision.

His latest series of candy coloured portraits split Kurt Cobain, James Dean, Sid Vicious, Jimmy Hendrix, Buddy Holly and music’s most recent victim, Amy Winehouse, quite literally, in half. The Andy Warhol inspired comical renders, are part morbid tongue in cheek (or skull) and part eternal depictions (flesh). Die Young salutes popular idols with untimely deaths. As Ben puts it…”the celebrity life-style that we seem to aspire to, had killed them all by the age of 27?

An illustrator for over twenty years, Ben Brown is a regular contributor of comics for editorial, including the notorious surfing publication ‘Stab’. He has designed extensive clothing graphics for brands such as Mambo, Insight, Globe, O’Neill, Rip Curl, Ocean & Earth, Nice Produce and Supply, and he has designed music and festival posters for the likes of Nirvana, Frenzal Rhomb, Silverchair, Fat Boy Slim, The Hoodoo Gurus, Big Day Out, Good Vibrations Festival, Homebake and The Falls Festival.

Die Young opens on the 9th of December from 6pm to 10pm and is on exhibition until the 24th December 2011 at The National Grid Gallery, 24 Chard Rd, Brookvale.

PRINTS FOR SALE ONLINE

On show will be numbered and signed limited edition prints, plus original works in
ink and paint. The show continues the themes of Bens previous solo show -
‘Kill your Idols’ – which combined celebrity, junk culture, zombies and skulls
in a graphically charged visual extravaganza. These new works pick up
where the previous show left off and the iconic images that are burned in
to our collective cultural psyche are given a new life… albeit as the living dead.

There will be a bonus live performance from rock ‘n’ roll demons Hong Kong,
who have been burning up various floors around town in recent times with
their melodic skuzzball wall of sound.

Opening Night: Friday 10th December 6-9pm.
Come and join us for a Christmas drink! We have loads of new goodies in the shop too, along with all the latest Art Books and Mags.

Exhibition is open from 11th December to 24th January.

The art of making beer is about to take on a whole new meaning in a one of a kind exhibition, the Keg Show at aMBUSH Gallery on July 1. Byron Bay’s Stone & Wood Brewery has collaborated with 12 of Australia’s leading artists to create three-dimensional works of art on kegs instead of canvases, resulting in pieces that highlight the opportunities for unusual innovation within the visual world. The artists will be painting a keg each, which will then be sold to benefit the charity of the artist’s choice.

The nominated artists have been selected from a wide range of backgrounds and individual styles, including Beci Orpin, Ben Brown, Catherine Campbell, Beastman, Numskull, Sara Hingle, Claudio Kirac, Nick Chalmers, Milly Loveknuckles, Terezka Beck, Amber B and Phibs.
As one of the owners of Stone & Wood, Ross Jurisich, explains, “There’s definitely an art to making great beer, but seeing what these artists have done with our kegs is just amazing. We’re really happy to be working with such a talented bunch of people and excited about helping a bunch of different charities at the same time.”

The Holga Diaries II is a raw and gritty double take of the urban landscapes and city streets of Europe as viewed by artist Lucia Fischer through the lens of her Holga camera. Captured on vagabond wanderings and travels, this body of work presents a series of hazy and desolate dreamscapes that evoke a sentimentality of times past and whose nostalgic presentation can be best described as hazy, dark and silent.

This show is about coming-of-age in a society that’s not quite right. Graduating from art school and being forced to face the real world, dealing with drug use, alcoholism and petty violence. “I seek to escape my own personal dilemmas through the image-making process.” Feeling the urge to draw attention to the degradations in standards of living, the everyday Australian’s general contempt for each other and fearing things that are different. These “low life’s” each bare their own interesting stories, it is through his art that Jack attempts to portray them as a means for public discourse. Drawing on several influences (including pop surrealism, tattoo art, skateboard graphics, psychedelic music posters etc.), Jack has created a body of work that will act as a single piece of art through the process of installation that will hopefully make people stop and think about what is wrong with the world we live in.

Opening Night Friday 16th April 6-9pm

Show runs 14th – 25th April
